In 2013 we started researching and traveling the US attending seminars and meeting yaks after a short encounter with one. Seeking a breed that was multipurpose, fun, exotic and interesting. Yak were it for us. Fiber, milk, meat, breeding–and wow. “Once you know yak, you never look back” is heard a lot in this breed circle. Our farm is a testament that yak are resilient, hearty and can thrive at lower elevations on the east coast in addition to the native higher elevations where they are most prevalent. Yak are multipurpose, and we intentionally breed at our farm for fiber and calm temperament. Our best part of each day is when we socialize with our herd–they each have unique personalities and are incredibly intelligent. Our farm philosophy is for every yak at Silver Cuff Farm to have a tracked pedigree and bloodline as well as DNA testing to define trait markers as there are fewer than 10,000 yak in America. Our fiber is tested yearly to contribute to pioneering studies on yak fiber in the US and how it can find it’s place in the textile industry here. Native to Tibet, and now settled lovingly to our boutique herd in New Jersey, the allure and connection with these animals continue daily to change our lives for the better. Call us if you want to learn more about this beautiful animal and the fiber characteristics it offers.
