From the Livestock Conservancy March 2021 eNews:
Are you ready for another rare wool challenge? Do you want to create some fuzzy fashion for your fingers?
Check out our Mighty Mitten Challenge!
Starting on March 10, we challenge you to make a pair of mittens or fingerless gloves with Fiber Artist and author Deborah Robson over the next four weeks!
We’ve created a special Facebook group just for the Mighty Mitten Challenge, where Deb will livestream a new lesson every Wednesday evening at 7 PM EST, March 10-31. She will discuss a number of mitten-making topics and field questions from participants about:
- Needles, Yarn Gauges, and Patterns
- Fabric Structures: Plain, Rib, Lace, and Colorwork
- Top Down and Bottom Up Techniques
- Ask Me Anything!
For the challenge, we will provide four mitten patterns, including a fingerless and a fold over pattern. You provide the yarn from a sheep breed listed on the Conservation Priority List. It can be wool that you have already spun for your passport stamp, or wool that your best friend spun for her passport. If you have left-over roving from your passport projects, you can even blend two breeds together to make your mitten yarn.
Not sure which sheep breeds are best for making mittens? Watch Deb Robson talk about that in our Challenge Launch Facebook Live. (Hint: she recommends the down breeds, which can be machine washed and dried.)
If you need to buy your mitten yarn, search for “yarn” in the Breeders and Products Directory.
