During this 3 hour natural dye workshop\, lead by Cait Nolan with the assistance of Laura Hricko\, we will discuss sustainable dye plant foraging practices\, explore concepts like native\, non-native and “invasive”\, and get hands on experience dyeing with locally foraged black walnut an simple resist techniques. We will also get a little sciencey as we dive into soy pretreatment as an alternative to metal salt mordanting and nerd out about the most common dye compounds found in locally foraged dye stuffs. All materials are included in the registration fee including a soy pretreated organic cotton shawl (44” x 89”) and a 4-page informational hand out. This workshop will be held at Cait’s home dye studio in Williamstown\, NJ (about 30 minutes from Philadelphia) Participants are welcome to bring an additional 500 grams of fiber to dye. \nRegistration Fee: $95 \nRegistration and more information at www.caitnolanmakes.com. \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook

SUMMARY:Introduction to Freeform Tapestry Weaving
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Freeform Tapestry Weaving\, an Outdoor Weaving Workshop at Raritan Headwaters \nby Anne Choi of Middle Brook Fiberworks \nFreeform tapestry weaving is an expressive\, process-oriented way to explore traditional handweaving techniques to create a piece that is personal and unique. A standing tabletop loom enables us to incorporate a wealth of textures such as fluffy roving\, long fleece locks\, silk ribbon\, cotton punis\, and handspun art yarn. We’ll learn how to set up the loom and plan a design. Using various weave structures and knotting methods\, we’ll discover how to achieve geometric shapes and contours. At the end of class\, everyone will have completed their own sampler tapestry to take home.  All equipment\, tools\, and materials will be provided\, and participants are invited to bring any special fibers or yarn they would like to include in their works. \nThe class will be given at Raritan Headwaters\, 2121 Larger Cross Road\, Gladstone\, NJ 07934\non 4/02/22 from 10 AM – 1:30-PM (Rain date: April 9)\nSignup/ More Info: https://www.raritanheadwaters.org/event/introduction-to-freeform-tapestry-weaving/ \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook

It can be daunting to think about where to begin as no two plots of land are exactly alike. As you choose a grazing system that will be a good fit for you and your livestock\, you will want to consider your personal goals\, time commitment and available resources. \nForage quality is the basis of animal health in a grazing system and is impacted by plant development and the timing of grazing. We’ll discuss the practical aspects of designing your pasture system\, such as the number of animals\, paddock size and fencing type. You’ll learn about various types of grazing systems (rotational grazing\, strip grazing\, high density grazing) and the benefits and challenges of each. You’ll be introduced to the costs associated with grazing and identify opportunities for additional grazing-based income. \nIn this self-paced course\, you will use a combination of readings\, videos and handouts to learn the basics of raising livestock on pasture. Readings will be your primary source of information\, along with supplemental videos and knowledge check questions. Each section of the course concludes with an opportunity to reflect on how to incorporate what you’ve learned into your grazing operation. This course will provide you with a practical\, research-based foundation on which to build a successful grazing enterprise. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook
